“Competition” (2015)

I had composed multiple classical pieces for instruments by this point, but since I wanted to write for musical theater, I decided to create a hybrid between a classical performance and a theater performance.

I had two friends at Longy who played the Oboe and Clarinet, so I thought: “Wouldn’t it be funny if they tried competing to see which one was a better player, only to realize they can make better music by playing together?” This piece “Competition” is the result of that concept, and nearly 10 years later, I’m still very happy with this work.
